8 Movies Every Geek Should Watch

MakeUseOf.com has a list of 8 films every geek should watch (and love). Even though I'm not a geek -more of a nerd, really- I did ok. There are annotations to the list at that link.

Office Space (1999)
Cube (1997)
WarGames (1983)
Blade Runner (1982)
THX 1138 (1971)
Dark City (1998)
Moon (2009)
They Live (1988)

I've seen all but the 1st and last named. Not too shabby.

Reigning Sound

This is #4 on the I Love Memphis blog's list of 365 Things to do in Memphis: Listen to (and/or download) the Reigning Sound for free.

I admit I mostly listen to whatever I come across on the radio when I'm in the car and not much otherwise. I stick with WEVL (unless they are talking or playing gospel or country music) or WUMR. My last experience with local music was listening to the garage band across the street from behind my house when I was in elementary school.

I'm listening to Reigning Sound's music as I write this and am finding it interesting. I wouldn't change the station if this music were playing, but I wouldn't seek out more of it either. I'm a musical peasant, though, so what do I know. I spend more time reading books and watching movies, so I'm out of the loop on this one.

They have a Facebook page. You can listen to some of their music here. An older video of the band performing in Memphis is on youtube:

Moonstruck

The Daughter came home from work Thursday night deathly ill. She was barely in recovery mode yesterday afternoon, and I thought a mindless comedy might be suitable. She slept through the movie (so "recovery" was an optimistic opinion), but The Husband and I got a kick out of it.

Moonstruck is a 1987 romantic comedy starring Cher, Nicholas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello and Vincent Gardenia. It's directed by Norman Jewison.

trailer:

It's won all kinds of awards and is on lots of "best" lists. Roger Ebert loves it. EW praises the performances. DVD Talk calls it an "unabashed romantic flight of fancy".

The Docks of New York

The Docks of New York is a 1928 silent film starring George Bancroft and Betty Compson. Guy Oliver is also in this.

You can watch it online:

The Docks Of New York by crazedigitalmovies

Senses of Cinema says, "The Docks of New York, a compelling and heartfelt exercise in style over content, is one of the best films of its era." Only the Cinema says, "Moody, rowdy, and sensuous, Josef von Sternberg's The Docks of New York is a beautiful work of romantic expressionist cinema" and calls it "a beautiful, bittersweet film with a great deal of poetically expressed emotion".

Dies the Fire

Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling has been in my tbr stack for some time. I can't remember how I came to pick it up. I enjoyed reading this, but I'm not sure I'll read the rest in the series. Details on military plans and exploits aren't my cuppa tea, although I did enjoy the description of the evolution of a Wiccan back-to-the-land community and the organizing of different groups and survival tactics. There's a cat named Pywackett at the Wiccan community, which -as my sister did that with a different spelling to her cat when she was a teenager- struck me as an unwanted touch of cuteness. I do tend to notice the overuse of any one word, and the adjective "ruddy" appears 3 times in the space of 12 pages early in the novel and again later on, which seems a bit much -especially considering two of the characters are named Rudy. I also got tired of Lord of the Ring references.

from the back of the book:
Michael Havel was flying over Idaho en route to the holiday home of his passengers when the plane's engines inexplicably died, forcing a less than perfect landing in the wilderness. And as Michael leads his charges to safety, he begins to realize that the engine failure was not an isolated incident.... Juniper Mackenzie was singing and playing guitar in a pub when her small Oregon town was thrust into darkness. Cars refused to start. Phones were silent. And when an airliner crashed, no sirens sounded and no fire trucks arrived. Now, taking refuge in her family's cabin with her daughter and a growing circle of friends, Juniper is determined to create a farming community to benefit the survivors of this crisis.... But even as people band together to help one another, others are building armies for conquest....
SF Reviews.net says it's "an intelligent, meticulously crafted, but overlong and sometimes pokey end-of-the-world epic". SF Site describes it as "a passably enjoyable but over-long and oddly focused story, set in a fascinating speculative world" and concludes, "Fans of novels focused on action, wilderness survival, fighting, and warfare, would be the most likely to enjoy this book, but anyone looking for something deeper is likely to come away disappointed." SF Reader gives it "Two stars for the repetition and rather weak story-telling plus four stars for the plot-line and astonishing depth of the ideas".

Trinity Is Still My Name

Trinity Is Still My Name is a 1971 Spaghetti Western sequel to They Call Me Trinity. It's written and directed by Enzo Barboni and stars Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer.

Spaghetti-Western.net says
When Trinity is still my Name was finally released, it broke all the records and became the most successful Italian film ever. Even today it’s still fifth on the list of biggest Italian box-office hits in history.
Fistful of Pasta closes with this:
Trinity is still my Name has less story and less venom than the first Trinity movie, but is probably even more fun to watch. It's true family entertainment. Warmly recommended.
The Spinning Image says, "in the main this is easy, undemanding viewing, and the fans would have it no other way."

They Call Me Trinity

They Call Me Trinity is a 1970 Spaghetti Western starring Terrence Hill, Bud Spencer and Farley Granger. There are Mormons in this film. How timely!

watch it online here:
Spaghetti-Western.net says, "People all over the world loved the movie." Roger Ebert gives it just 2 1/2 stars but speaks fondly of it. The Spinning Image notes that the films in the Trinity series "were worldwide hits". Fistful of Pasta opens with this:
Generally known as the film that saved the Italian film industry and killed the spaghetti western, this film did for the comedy western what A Fistful of Dollars had done for the die hard spaghettis: it spawned an entire army of false sequels, loose sequels, pale imitations, lame imitations and some nice sequels and colorful imitations as well.
and closes by saying, "All in all they're excellent family entertainment and as such warmly recommended."

Yuma

The Last Killer

The Last Killer -sometimes called Django, the Last Killer, is a 1968 Spaghetti Western. It stars George Eastman, in his first film, and Anthony Ghidra. Giuseppe Vari directs. It's a bit slow to develop, but I enjoyed watching it. This reminds me a bit of Day of Anger. Of course, that one has Lee Van Cleef, and this one doesn't, but, then, nothing's perfect.

youtube has it online:

Spaghetti-Western.net says it's
a nice little western, well-directed and well-acted, both Ghidra and Eastman are excellent. Eastman calls it one of his favourite westerns. According to him, Serbian actor Ghidra was initially chosen for his face, but to many people's surprise, he turned out to be an excellent actor, one of the better within the genre.

Coffee in a Tower

The Daughter asked me to have coffee with her at the top of the Clark Tower, the 3rd tallest building in Memphis, overlooking miles and miles of Memphis, and probably parts of Arkansas and Mississippi. There's a sweet little restaurant and bar on the 33rd floor, and we sat next to a window on the south side and had coffee and chocolate cake. Next time I go I plan on ordering the crab cakes and taking a picture of the fabulous view.

Within Our Gates (1920)

Within Our Gates is a 1920 silent film about race relations directed by Oscar Micheaux. Wikipedia claims "it is the oldest known surviving film made by an African-American director".

I find the exaltation of "the North, where the prejudices and hatreds of the South do not exist" a bit hard to buy. It seems to move a bit slowly, and it's hard for me to get involved. Too much romance for my taste, maybe.

It's listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, which says the film "has immense historical value" and describes it as "powerful, controversial and still haunting in its depiction of the atrocities committed by white Americans against blacks during this era". A Film Canon calls it "a powerful, sophisticated inversion of Birth Of A Nation."

Earth (1930)

Earth (or Zemlya) is a 1930 Soviet film directed by Alexander Dovzhenko, a Ukrainian filmmaker. It seems virtually plotless to me, with lots of fairly static images of faces and fields and sunflowers. There is much weeping, wailing and bemoaning of fates. Alternating with laughter. And a tractor.

via youtube:

It's listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, which calls it ""arguably... the single greatest achievement of the ever-more-impressive Soviet silent cinema" and says, "Anyone looking for the origins of Andrei Tarkovsky's cinema must start with Earth." Slant Magazine calls it an "orgiastic paean to Soviet collectivism and tractor-ism". FilmReference.com opens with this:
Earth is a tribute to life in the Ukraine, the birthplace of its creator, Alexander Dovzhenko. The film's star is essentially the Ukrainian village in which the story is set: it is not necessarily a tale of Russian farmers and kulaks but a visual poem about life and the calm acceptance of death.

Rounding the Mark

Rounding the Mark is the 7th in the Sicilian Inspector Salvo Montalbano detective series by Andrea Camilleri. I found a few of these at my favorite local used book store, started buying them new, then got the ones I didn't already have for Christmas. I've been enjoying them all.

from the back of the book:
Two seemingly unrelated deaths form the central mystery of Rounding the Mark. They will take Montalbano deep into a secret world of illicit trafficking in human lives, and the investigation will test the limits of his physical, psychological, and moral endurance. Disillusioned and no longer believing in the institution he serves, will he withdraw or delve deeper into his work?

Eurocrime recommends it and calls it "a nicely complex tale populated with three dimensional characters, each with their own individual personality traits." The Telegraph offers a positive review. Amore Travel Guides says, "In spite of the serious topics Camilleri manages to keep the dark humor his mysteries are known for." The Guardian claims "The real Sicily lives in his pages," notes that "His birthplace of Porto Empedocle, on which Vigàta is based, has changed its name to Vigàta" and says,
the Montalbano mysteries have a timeless feel about them. They are the books of a wise old man who has lived a lot, eaten well and versed himself in the best Italian and foreign literature.

I've also read these:
1. The Shape of Water
2. The Terra-Cotta Dog
3. The Snack Thief
4. Voice of the Violin
5. Excursion to Tindari
6. The Smell of Night
9. The Paper Moon
10. August Heat
11. The Wings of the Sphinx
12. The Track of Sand

Messiah

Messiah, Apotheosis: Book Three is the 3rd book in S. Andrew Swann's space opera trilogy. Again, my complaint is that it -like book 2- starts off with an info-dump summary of the previous work, and I'd have preferred that to be in a story-thus-far section I could have easily skipped. That said, this has been a fun series.

from the back of the book:
In this final volume of the Apotheosis trilogy, the seemingly unstoppable alien AI Adam has cast his nano-cloud of destruction across the known universe. All who stand against him are turned to dust. All who accept him as their god are absorbed into his consciousness. And as solar system after solar system falls under his sway, there are only a few who old any hope of breaking Adam's stranglehold all sentient life.

In the heart of the Vatican waits a 'man' from the past who might point the way to a future beyond Adam....

The fleets surrounding the world of Bakunin will sacrifice what they must in a last-ditch effort to defeat the undefeatable....

And on Bakunin itself -amid a planetwide campaign of conquest- humanity's last hope may lie with Nickolai Rajasthan, a Moreau who has believed, all his life, that the human race that created his kind is already damned beyond redemption....

SF Signal closes its review with this:
Messiah is an excellent conclusion to a consistently good series and proves that S. Andrew Swann is one of science fiction’s most underrated authors.
